New years resolutions have been a tradition for a long time now, but a lot of times people do not follow through with them. My wife and I were talking about this last night and we decided to make some changes for the new year. We were going to hold each other accountable for them throughout the year, that way if one of us started to slip we had someone who could get us back on track. It’s always good to have an accountability partner, it could be a family member or a close friend. We want this year to be the most prosperous and healthiest year of our lives. We sat down and we listed some categories that we got from David Ramsey and we started to fill in our goals for them for the up coming year.

These are the categories and a couple of the things that I wrote down for my own goals, I urge you to take this and write your own goals for 2013.

I strongly believe that if you do this and stick with it you will grow in your CrossWalk and it will be the most prosperous and healthiest year yet. I would like to here some feed back from you and would like for you to tell me some of your new year resolutions.

Happy New Year!

Prayer is something that is often forgotten or overlooked in today’s christian world. I can tell you that there have been many times where I just don’t feel like praying. Whether it be because I think I’m not getting results or because I would rather do other things with my time. One night last week I came home from work and I had a very strenuous day so all I wanted to do was to just kick back and watch some football. Just kinda wanted to unwind from the day. After about 20 minutes my wife asked me if I wanted to turn off the TV so we both could read and pray. I really just wanted to chill and set mindlessly in front of the TV for a couple of hours, I didn’t feel like reading or praying. But my wife said something that really stuck with me. She said, “If you have had such a hard day that you are mentally and physically drained, shouldn’t you want to read and pray more than ever to refresh yourself. Instead you are setting in front of a TV that’s not beneficial.” She was exactly right, He is where i draw my strength and I will not get it from anywhere else.

So what is it that stops us from praying, some would say it’s the devil and that can be true. But most of the time it’s not the devil. It’s ourselves, we cause the distractions. For instance Friday i went and bought a new TV, 40 inch LED smart TV. I love it, but you know what? All i did was buy another distraction, a 40 inch distraction. Don’t get me wrong we all like to buy things. We all need our own personal things, but sometimes we overload ourselves with toys and never give ourselves the opportunity to unload ourselves in prayer. I’m not telling you that watching TV is bad, because i watch it too. I’m just saying that we need to watch out for those distractions that try to prevent us from our personal time with God.

It’s not only distractions that keep us from prayer, it’s ourselves. There have been numerous times that i have talked myself out of praying with the all to familiar conversation with yourself about how you don’t feel like it. Or you would rather be doing something else because you feel like your wasting time just because you’re not seeing results immediately. Or maybe your new to the whole christian life and you think praying is weird, thinking that you could really be talking to God. But that’s the beauty of it, you can talk to God. See when Jesus died for our sins on the cross His blood paid the price for us, which means that when we accept what He did for us we get the privilege to be able to commune with God. As an unworthy man, made worthy through the redemptive plan of Christ.

If you are new to the praying thing it will most likely be uncomfortable and awkward for you at first. But if you will make the effort to set a couple of times out in the day to be by yourself and just take the time to focus on him. It will pay off and it wont be weird for you. It will become like second nature to you, because you will be talking to your loving Father, and not just some far off angry god. (see Matt. 7:7-11 at the bottom of the text)

“but I always run out of things to say.” praying isn’t always about asking for stuff. Sometimes prayer can just be thanking God. Thanking Him for your salvation, or your health, your family and friends, etc. Praying can also be just talking to God about your day, what you did or didn’t do. Prayer will become more real to us if we pray to God like a father and talk to Him with thanksgiving and love, instead of only praying when we sinned or when we need something from Him.

If you are new to prayer i suggested that you read the following scriptures daily, I believe that i will help you with your prayer life.

  • Ephesians 1:15-23 “Therefore I also, hearing of your faith in the Lord Jesus and love to all the saints,  do not cease giving thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened, that you may know what is the hope of His calling, and what is the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us, the ones believing according to the working of His mighty strength which He worked in Christ in raising Him from the dead, and He seated Him at His right hand in the heavenlies, far above all principality and authority and power and dominion, and every name being named, not only in this world, but also in the coming age. And He has put all things under His feet and gave Him to be Head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.”
  • Ephesians 3:14-21“For this cause I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in Heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height, and to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge, that you might be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, forever. Amen.”
  • Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
  • Matthew 7:7-11 “Ask and it shall be given to you; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you. For each one who asks receives; and he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, if his son asks a loaf, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks a fish, will he give him a snake? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Father in Heaven give good things to those who ask Him?”

So I Just encourage you this week just try to take some extra time and spend it with God. Just go somewhere private and just thank God for what you have, thank God for you salvation, health, and the people in life. Don’t put a time limit on it. if you were talking to someone who you really care about, and you were telling them all about how you love them and how much you appreciate all they have done for you. Then you look down at your watch and say. “Well that’s my five minutes, sorry…” or you Phone rings “Sorry i got to take this, it’s more important.” Just put your phone on silent and don’t look at the time. Just give God your undivided attention and He will listen.

Living with temptation is something that we as Christians can not avoid. Temptation is all around us, it comes in various forms. And Temptation can effect people differently. For instance, someone may be tempted to steal, but have no problem rejecting the thought of committing adultery. Or someone may have issues with lusting after women, but has no problem with shooting down the opportunity of stealing. We all have our weakness, we all have our temptations, and we all have our sins. None of us are perfect, we mess up sometimes. But that’s not to keep us from walking worthy of the call God has given us.

Though we might not be able to help the fact that we all are tempted by one thing or the other. We can stop entertaining the thoughts that come to our mind. When a thought comes, we have the ability to keep it and continue feeding the thought with our own thoughts. Or we can cast that thought down and refuse to continue thinking on it.

A perfect example of this was today I went to home depot to pick up a few things for work. The list did not include a new set of drills all though I believe it should have. Anyways I walk through the store and pick up all the material that I need and I proceed to walk to the check out line. When long and behold the drill set that I wanted was on an end cap, on sale. The thought immediately comes to my mind. “What,?! Rigid drill set for $159.99, that’s 20 dollars off!” but then I countered with “But my wife will kill me, I don’t even need them.” ( see, at that moment is where I should have cast down the thought of buying the drills and walked away.) (p.s but I didn’t) “But if I had the them I would use them on everything, I really need these.” I entertained the thought for several minutes before finally deciding that I really don’t have the extra cash for this, and walked away. But this is exactly what we do when we see something that is pleasing to the eye that we no we  need and we begin to dwell on it. The example doesn’t seem that bad, but if I went through with it I would have been of almost $200 out of my pocket and I would have an argument with my wife, etc. But what if the thing that is pleasing to the eye isn’t a drill, it’s a gentleman’s club, or  a drug. What then? Do you set there and think about satisfying  the temptation, or do you leave? This is where we need to learn how to cast down the small thoughts, that way when a dangerous thought like that comes up we have no problem casting it down.

Casting down thoughts are not hard to do, it’s as simple as saying to yourself. “I refuse to think on ……” and sometimes you will have to say it out loud because you mind will talk over you. Think about how Jesus resisted temptation, in the gospels it says that He spoke with scripture. When the thought surfaces, speak out with a scripture. If you don’t know any scripture, memorize a few so you can fight back. There is a battle to be fought in the arena of the mind, and you will be utterly destroyed if you do not know scripture to save you. People lose the battle everyday because they continue to feed their thoughts.  We need to make a conscious effort to discern our thoughts. To realize whether we should continue to think on them or cast them down. Remember you can’t help to be tempted, even Jesus was tempted. But Jesus never entertained them, as soon as the devil proposed something, Jesus always countered with a scripture.

So I challenge you to look up some battle verses and to do inventory of you mind. Throw out the thoughts that shouldn’t be in there. If One comes, don’t feed it just get rid of it.

We are called to be the light of the world, to show the love of God to all people. in Matthew 5:14-16 it says ‘You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden. People don’t light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before people in such a way that they will see your good actions and glorify your Father in heaven.’

We are not to hide the fact that we are a christian from the rest of the world. But you will have to forgive me, because I have done it, and I feel like a crap sack afterwards. I work in construction and there are a lot of rough guys that are in the trade that I am in. They don’t particularly care what you believe or  how they talk in front of you. Hiding the fact that you’re a christian is easy to do. It’s as simple as getting drawn in by people talking about the way someone is dressed, and you chime in with your own comment that doesn’t exactly promote that person. Some of you may disagree with me, but a true follower of Christ should stand up for that person or at least not say anything at all. Hiding your beliefs can also be done by hanging out with friends. What if someone wants to watch a movie that you know is rated R and has multiple screens that go against what you believe. It doesn’t seem like much, but what happens when you watch one movie. Well the next time a real nasty movie that shows sadistic serial killers raping and killing people comes out and they want to see it, what will you say? That you don’t think that you should see it? that you are a christian and you don’t think it’s right to watch it. It’s easy, I struggle with it to. But now I have myself in a place in my life where God is first. So when something comes up I look to see if this is right or wrong, will I make someone think badly of Christians. Will I cause people to stumble because I call myself a christian and I’m seen watching ungodly things. The fact of the matter is that we are all watched by someone, and if and when we slip up someone will see it. They will get a bad taste in their mouths about Christianity. Even though sometimes that can not be stopped, I don’t want to be a part of that if I can keep from it.

I’m endeavoring to be the light of the world as Jesus called me to be. I am going to hold my self accountable to what shows I watch and what I say around others. This is a major part of the CrossWalk, it’s an everyday decision to do the right thing. There will be days that you want to slip up and say something rude to the crazy guy trying to run you over with his power chair, but resist that.

So what kind of light have you been lately? My light use to look like someone put a dimmer on low then bust it out with a sling shot, but then I was corrected by a friend. He asked me “So how many people do you think you have caused to stumble because of your actions?” pretty face slapping isn’t it? I said what do you mean, how am I doing that? He said because you are calling yourself a christian but living like the devil. The next Sunday I actually went to church and gave my life to God. That was a few years ago now, but I still think about those words, it helps me keep in mind that it’s not just my eternity that I’m jeopardizing. I don’t want to get to heaven and realize that there are people in hell because they saw me act a certain way and they followed those action, then spent an eternity in hell. No, my lights not on dim. My light is shining brightly to all those who want to see.

You don’t have to be in the ministry to have your light turned on. If you’re a christian then you have a light, so let it shine. You don’t have to be flaky or weird about it, but if the opportunity arises take it. Tell someone your testimony, tell them how God saved you. If you’re not into that and your shy like I used to be, try just having a good attitude, having a positive out look on things, or have strong values. You don’t have to have open air tent meeting to let your light shine, just buy the person’s lunch behind you in the fast food line. Just tell them that they’re an important person and God loves them. That way you can do it anonymously and it shares the love of God.

So don’t hide that light of yours, go out and share the love of God through action. I challenge you to try to do at least one-act of love each week by giving to someone in need. Buying someones meal, or even just writing your boss a note that says i appreciate you and God loves you. Just do something generous for someone. Don’t put a limit on the ways you can share the love of God. You can post them on my twitter page @my_crosswalk.

Sharing the love of God is the CrossWalk

Being a christian in it’s most simplistic form is to be a little Christ, to be Christ like, a person who exemplifies in his or her life the teachings of Christ.

To succeed in the CrossWalk you need to have a personal relationship with God. God made a way for us to commune with Him by giving up his only son to die for the sins that we have committed and will commit. Through the death, burial, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ the plan of redemption was brought out. Mankind as a whole separated from God because of one mans sin, were brought back into right standing by one man, the Son of God Jesus Christ. Because of this act of love we are able to come before a Holy God confident and bold, knowing who we are. God sees us through what he did on the cross, he sees us with no sin. In the gospel of Matthew chapter 7:7-11 says ‘Ask and it shall be given to you; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you. For each one who asks receives; and he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, if his son asks a loaf, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks a fish, will he give him a snake? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Father in Heaven give good things to those who ask Him?’ ask and it will be given to you, this is how we can pray to our Father in Heaven who generously gives us what we are in need of. In the book of James 1:5 says ‘But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and with no reproach, and it shall be given to him.’ If your not sure what to do in a situation, just stop and take the time to seek God on the matter, He will give you the solution. You have to realize that when you accepted Jesus into your heart you were made to be a child of God. Just like what it says in the scripture of Matthew how much more would your heavenly father give. You see God is not some kind of far away angry God, He’s a loving God. Loving so much he gave his son up for you. If you keep some of this in mind when you pray, it will make you more confident and you will get more out of your prayer. You will have a more successful prayer life if you come to God knowing what he has done for you, and who he has made you.

When Jesus was crucified, we also were crucified with Him.

Galatians 2:20 ‘I have been crucified with Christ, and I live; yet no longer I, but Christ lives in me. And that life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith toward the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself on my behalf.’

Romans 6:6 ‘knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be destroyed, that from now on we should not serve sin.’

When Jesus Was crucified our sins was also Crucified, enabling us to be cleansed by the blood of Jesus. The crucifixion of Jesus is what made us to be able to come to a Holy God as a unholy man and commune with Him. But prayer isn’t just about asking for things, it’s also an act of worship and thanksgiving. All of us are fathers, or have fathers, or have someone in the life as a father figure can understand this. When a little child constantly comes up to you begging for something they want. The first couple times it’s cute, so you give in, you give them there Oreo and go on. But it’s a different story when the child only comes up to you only when it wants something. I don’t know about you but i would be more likely to give the child what it wants if he/she comes to me on a daily basis and says ” you know what? your pretty awesome, looking good have you been going to the gym?” I would give that kid the whole bag of cookies. Well that’s the same thing with God, you can’t expect to get anything out of your prayer if you only come to God when your in need, you have to have a day to day relationship with Him. So i challenge you to just take the time to just thank Him every once in awhile, thank Him for the cross. Thank Him for your salvation, your home, your friends, your family, etc. It’s not hard, and i promise you if you take time to thank Him and just Love on Him a bit you will have a successful prayer life.

Just Remember Your a Child of God no matter what you have heard all you life, it doesn’t matter what people think of you. It matters what God thinks of you, He sees you through what he did on the cross. You were crucified with Jesus and your sins were forgiven, enabling you to come before a holy God as a unholy man. You have right standing with God, you have to the ability to pray and seek out God. And remember don’t get to caught up in only asking for things, praise and thank Him for what He has done for you. So I urge you to Get into your Bible and See who you are in Christ and what your postion is as a heir of God. You can begin by reading the Pauline epistles. This would help you learn more about our standing with God, and how He sees us. I would suggest reading Romans then moving to Ephesians, Galatians, etc.

Having a personal relationship with God is essential to your CrossWalk

[kraws-wawk, kros-]

– a path or road that one chooses to take on a daily basis, to live as an imitator of Jesus Christ, to act out to a higher standard of living, choosing to uphold values and character, showing the love of God through actions, not merely by the words that we speak.
Anyone can see someone in need of something and say ” bless you brother” and walk away leaving them empty-handed. The CrossWalk challenges you to take action and take the time to see what the person is in need of. The CrossWalk is more than going to church and saying, “God bless you” when someone sneezes. It’s having a daily, personal relationship with God. It’s having devotional time everyday by praying and spending time reading your bible. The Bible says in Romans 12:2 ‘Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.’ It’s says to renew your mind. How do you do that? You renew your mind by reading your bible and thinking about yourself the way God thinks of you. God sees you through the eyes of Jesus, He see’s you through the eyes of love. He looks at you with all your faults and short comings and he tells you that you are a child of God, that you have right standing with Him and that you are holy and blameless before him. You need to get the revelation of how God sees you, before you can see someone else like God does. That is the CrossWalk seeing others the way God sees them.

My day to day personal relationship with God is not an easy one. I’m human just like anyone else, i make mistake, and i fall short. my family and friends think that i have it all figured out because i went to bible school and dream of being a pastor. I still struggle with things just as anyone else. I’m going to start my blog of with a story that happened to me and my wife a couple of months ago. It was the hardest thing i ever had to go through and i hope you all that read this can learn something from it.

Last summer my wife and i thought that we would try to have a baby, seeing as all of our friends were doing it we thought, why not? You always see on movies people having sex one time and there pregnant. Well in the real world it doesn’t just happen unless your just beastly fertile. So it took us about a month or two before we found out that she was pregnant. We went to the doctor and found out that it was healthy and had a strong heart beat. When she was 22 weeks we went in for a check up and had a ultrasound done. As we set there looking at the screen seeing our little peanut i start to wonder why do i not here the heart beat like i did last time. Did they forget to turn up the volume, were the speakers not working. A few moments later the doctor asked if we knew. “knew what?”, I said.

There was no cause for what happened,we were a stress free home and she hadn’t been sick. We were stunned we later found out that 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage. Knowing that I was going to a bible school my first instinct was to pray that God would raise my baby to life. I don’t know why I didn’t see my miracle, I don’t know if it was something I didn’t do, or did do. But I do know that it hit me and my wife hard. You know in a time of crisis, that’s when you seek God the most, that’s when He’s the closest if you just look. I would like to say that as a christian and bible school student that I ran to God and he made everything okay, but I can’t. Because instead I ran away from him. I stopped going to church, I stopped praying, I stopped reading my bible. And how many of you know if you put a wedge between you and God then the devil will drive it further and further down. I stayed like that for weeks before I knew it I was worthless, all I would want to do is stay at home be by myself. I didn’t even want to talk to my wife. Just set mindlessly in front of the TV for hours. That’s not healthy no matter who you are. Then one morning I was in the shower and I realized I had to forgive God. Wait! What!? forgive God the one who forgave us, the one who redeemed us from sin and kept us from hell. Yes. You see I blamed him, even though he had nothing to do with it. And at that moment when i finally drew near to him and fell to my knees and cried out for him he came, he picked me up,  he dusted me off and said i’m here for you.

You see the bible says he will never leave you nor forsake you. He didn’t leave me I left him, but because of his grace and mercy he openly received me. God did not take my baby from me the devil did. John 10:10 says that the theft comes not but to steal, kill, and destroy but I come that you may have life and have it more abundantly.

I have made a commitment to myself to focus on the small things in my every day life, to see to it that I react like Jesus would react. To build my self up to the image and likeness of Christ.
